Syntax
Syntax is the arrangement or order of words, determined by both the writer's style and grammar rules.
Method of Teaching
An 8th grade art teacher begins a lesson about the impressionist movement and hands out a paper with a passage on why it was called the 'impressionist movement'. The passage has some words deleted from it, so the teacher instructs the students to work in groups of three to choose the missing words using a list of possible word choices that are displayed on the whiteboard. All the words that are missing are adjectives.
Then, students are instructed to report back to the teacher with the words they selected and to tell the class their reasons for why they selected each word. The students are asked to explain the different cues they used to make their decision. Finally, the teacher hands out a paper with the correctly completed passage and asks the students to compare the words they chose with the original passage.
