Morphology
Morphology is the study of the internal structure of words and how they are formed as well as their relationship to other words in the same language. It analyzes the structure of words and parts of words such as stems, root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
Method of Teaching
A 6th grade life sciences teacher begins a lesson on different animal species with an introduction of Greek and Latin root words. The teacher starts by presenting a list of five new root words and explains their meaning in Greek or Latin. Then, for practice, the teacher instructs the students to identify on a worksheet the words that they think might contain one of those root words they just learned.
Next, the teacher instructs them to work in groups of three or four and try to guess the meaning of those words using what they know about Greek or Latin roots. Finally, the teacher instructs the students to finish their group work and then review together as a whole class each word on the worksheet that did contain one of those root words while breaking down morpheme by morpheme the final meaning of each word and underlining each part for all the students to understand.
